Why is it important to stay safe online? Most of us are ‘connected’ via our laptops, mobile phones, tablets or personal computer. The potential for the internet to be a valuable and a fun resource for entertainment, making friends, keeping in touch and learning is huge. But if you use the internet, you could be at risk of illegal activity or abuse - be it bullying, fraud or something more serious. Unlike seeing someone face to face, on the net, people aren't always what they first seem. In the same way you learn about safety when you leave the house, it is important to learn how to stay safe online. These are skills that will stay with you for life.

Don’t post any personal information online. This means you should not share your real name, home address, or telephone number. This also counts for passwords and other sensible data. Remember, just because someone asks for information about you does not mean you have to tell them anything about yourself!

  #beprotective

Keep your Firewall and Anti-Virus software activated. They inform you about illegal content on websites and protect your computer from viruses, which can damage your operating system seriously.  Watch your Wi-Fi connectivity. Protect your network by changing your router’s default settings and making sure you have the connection password-protected. With using a VPN it is not possible to track or trace you, which gives you a big possibility to discover the Internet safely.

While most Internet activity is legal, occasionally you might come across something that just seems wrong, creepy or even scares you. If you see serious illegal, violent or any kind of perverted content or activity on websites, report it to the police. Know what cyber bullying is and tell someone if you think it’s happening to you. Cyber bullying is when someone picks on you, annoys, embarrasses, or threatens you over and over again using technology, such as the internet or a phone.

The range of content provided on the Internet is big. You will definitly find any kind of  entertaining content such as social media, videogames, movies & music, ect., which will mesmerize and stop you from important duties. So take care of how long you use the Internet and set up a time limitation if necessary.

Another big annoying are spam mails. They often contain a request to pay bills or to leave sensible data such as credit card informations or personal informations. While most of the email provider filter spam email, some mails manage to cheart their way through the spam identification. If you consider the content of a mail or the mail adress itself as unserious and potentially dangerous, report the mail and delete it. Same goes for scams. Read articles and blogs, follow the news, and share this so you can  learn about different kinds of scams and what you can do to avoid them and also help your friends.
